Trump pressures Herzog on Netanyahu pardon

Published on: April 30, 2026 9:07 PM

US President Donald Trump has renewed pressure on Israeli President Isaac Herzog to grant a pardon to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, according to reports. The move comes as Netanyahu continues to face an ongoing corruption trial in Israel. The issue has added political tension amid war and regional instability.

Trump reportedly told Axios that Netanyahu raised his legal case during a recent phone call. He criticized the timing of the court proceedings, saying the Israeli leader should focus on wartime priorities instead. As a result, Trump reiterated his view that the trial is politically damaging for Israel.

Netanyahu briefly left his court hearing on Wednesday for security consultations linked to developments in Gaza. Judges had partially rejected his request to shorten the session but allowed a temporary break. He later returned to court after attending defense-related discussions.

The Israeli prime minister faces charges of corruption, bribery, and breach of trust in multiple cases. The indictment was filed in 2019, and the trial remains ongoing. A conviction could carry prison time, depending on court findings.

Trump has repeatedly called for a pardon, arguing that Netanyahu is a “wartime leader” who should not face trial during conflict. However, Israeli law requires specific conditions for a pardon, including acceptance of responsibility. Meanwhile, political debate continues ahead of upcoming elections in Israel.
