Bilawal Bhutto Zardari on Monday addressed an event in Karachi commemorating Marka-i-Haq, describing Pakistan’s response during last year’s military conflict with India as a reflection of national unity and resilience.

The event was organised by the Sindh government to mark the anniversary of the 2025 conflict, which began after the Pahalgam attack in April and concluded with a ceasefire on May 10 following days of military escalation between the two neighbouring countries. Marka-i-Haq is the official term used by Pakistan for the conflict period linked to Operation Bunyanum Marsoos.

This victory was not the victory of weapons alone. It was a triumph of resolve, it was a triumph of unity, it was the triumph of people who refused to kneel – Chairman PPP @BBhuttoZardari at the ceremony marking one year of Marka-e-Haq pic.twitter.com/nEBFQHKFUV

One year ago, Pakistan stood at the edge of uncertainty. The drums of conflict echoed across our borders. The air was thick with fear, speculation, and the designs of those who believed Pakistan could be bent, Pakistan could be broken, or Pakistan could be bullied. They were… pic.twitter.com/II4IKxCtgj

Speaking at the ceremony, the Pakistan Peoples Party chairman said the outcome was not solely defined by military strength but also by collective resolve, discipline, and national solidarity. He praised the role of Pakistan’s armed forces, diplomatic channels, and citizens during the period of heightened tensions.

Bilawal stated that Pakistan did not seek confrontation but responded out of necessity to protect sovereignty and national interests. He also stressed that the anniversary should serve as a moment of reflection and responsibility rather than celebration alone.

Looking ahead, the former foreign minister linked national security with economic and social development, calling for greater investment in education, healthcare, and economic stability. He argued that strengthening domestic institutions and opportunities would reduce vulnerability to external pressure.

The 2025 conflict followed a sharp deterioration in relations after India accused Pakistan of involvement in the Pahalgam attack, allegations Islamabad denied. The crisis escalated into air strikes, retaliatory operations, and military exchanges before a ceasefire was reached with reported international facilitation.

Pakistan has since declared May 10 as Youm-i-Marka-i-Haq, to be observed annually. Officials say the day recognises the country’s stance during the conflict while reaffirming commitment to sovereignty, peace, and national unity.
