Pakistan Navy rescues stranded crew in Arabian Sea

Published on: May 5, 2026 10:30 AM

The Pakistan Navy launched a humanitarian rescues mission in the Arabian Sea after a cargo vessel carrying Indian and Indonesian crew members suffered a technical malfunction during its voyage.

According to security officials, the vessel, identified as MV Gautam, was travelling from Oman to India when it developed mechanical issues at sea, prompting an emergency request for assistance.

The distress alert was reportedly relayed by the Maritime Rescue and Coordination Center in Mumbai, which contacted Pakistani authorities to seek urgent help for the stranded crew.

In response, the Pakistan Navy dispatched a vessel from the Pakistan Maritime Security Agency, named Kashmir, to support the operation and ensure the safety of those onboard.

Officials said the crew includes six Indian nationals and one Indonesian citizen. Emergency teams are currently providing food supplies, medical support, and technical assistance while efforts continue to stabilise the vessel.

Security sources stated that the rescue reflects Pakistan’s continued commitment to fulfilling international maritime responsibilities and extending humanitarian support regardless of nationality.

No injuries or casualties have been reported so far, and the condition of all crew members is said to be stable.

The Arabian Sea is a vital international shipping route, connecting ports across South Asia, the Middle East, and East Africa. Maritime authorities frequently coordinate across borders in emergency situations to ensure vessel safety and avoid disruptions to trade routes.

The latest operation comes at a time of heightened regional maritime tensions due to instability in nearby Gulf waters. Despite broader geopolitical challenges, officials said humanitarian rescue obligations remain a priority for maritime agencies.

Pakistan Navy officials reiterated that they remain prepared to respond rapidly to emergencies involving commercial or civilian vessels operating in regional waters.

The successful coordination between Pakistani and Indian maritime authorities in this case highlights the importance of practical cooperation in ensuring safety at sea.

Further technical evaluations of the vessel are expected as rescue personnel continue assistance operations before the ship can safely resume its journey or be escorted to a nearby port for repairs.
