Saudi Arabia backs Pakistani mediation amid Iran US tensions

Published on: May 5, 2026 5:46 PM

Saudi Arabia has called for restraint and renewed diplomatic engagement amid rising tensions between the United States and Iran, urging all sides to support mediation efforts led by Pakistan. The Saudi Foreign Ministry stressed that dialogue remains essential to prevent further escalation that could destabilize the wider region and global economy.

In its statement shared on social media platform X, the ministry highlighted support for Pakistan-led diplomatic efforts aimed at achieving a political settlement between Washington and Tehran. It emphasized that sustained conflict would harm both regional stability and international interests, particularly in energy and trade routes.

Additionally, Saudi Arabia called for restoring maritime navigation in the Strait of Hormuz to its pre-war conditions, stressing the need for safe and unrestricted passage of commercial vessels. The kingdom warned that disruptions in this critical waterway could have severe consequences for global energy supplies and shipping security.

The appeal comes amid renewed tensions in the Gulf region, where recent exchanges of missile and drone attacks have heightened fears of broader conflict. Reports indicate that the United Arab Emirates accused Iran of launching strikes on its territory, while Iran claimed defensive actions against foreign naval presence in nearby waters.

The situation has escalated since earlier military actions involving the United States and Israel, which triggered retaliatory responses from Iran and intensified regional instability. Although a ceasefire was brokered through Pakistani mediation in April, diplomatic talks have struggled to produce a lasting agreement, leaving the truce fragile.

As tensions persist, international stakeholders continue to push for renewed negotiations to prevent further escalation. Saudi Arabia’s latest call reinforces growing regional concern that prolonged conflict could disrupt energy markets, trade routes, and broader geopolitical stability.
