Selena Gomez Honors Martin Short With Emotional Tribute

Published on: May 7, 2026 3:30 PM

Selena Gomez paid a heartfelt tribute to her longtime friend and Only Murders in the Building co-star Martin Short while attending the premiere of his new Netflix documentary, Marty, Life Is Short. The singer and actress praised the veteran comedian for his intelligence, humour, and inspiring personality, while also reflecting on the emotional strength he showed throughout several devastating personal tragedies in his life.

Sharing memories from the premiere on social media, Gomez described Martin Short as a true legend whose joyful outlook on life deeply moved her during the documentary screening. She explained that the film made her laugh, cry, and empathise with his painful experiences, while also admiring the positivity and warmth he continued spreading despite enduring heartbreaking losses over the years.

Moreover, the documentary explores Short’s remarkable entertainment career alongside the painful family tragedies that shaped his life behind the scenes. In one emotional moment from the trailer, the 76-year-old comedian joked about having a “speed dial to the funeral parlour,” while recalling the deaths of both parents, his brother, and later his beloved wife after years of marriage.

Most recently, Martin Short experienced another heartbreaking tragedy when his eldest daughter, Katherine Hartley Short, reportedly died by suicide earlier this year at the age of 42. Despite these overwhelming losses, friends and fellow entertainers featured in the documentary praised his ability to remain cheerful, energetic, and deeply supportive toward others throughout his decades-long journey in the entertainment industry.

Additionally, several well-known stars including Steve Martin, Tom Hanks, Eugene Levy, and Catherine O’Hara appear in the documentary to celebrate Martin Short’s extraordinary career and personality. Their appearances further highlight the deep respect and admiration the comedy legend continues receiving from colleagues and close friends across Hollywood.

Meanwhile, Marty, Life Is Short is scheduled for a global release on Netflix on May 12, 2026, offering audiences a powerful and emotional look into Martin Short’s life. Through humour, grief, and resilience, the documentary presents an inspiring story of a performer who continued making people smile even while carrying immense personal pain behind the spotlight.
