UNESCO offers global career opportunities for professionals

Exploring International Consultant Opportunities at UNESCO 2025-2026 - Global South Opportunities

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) is offering career opportunities for professionals seeking to build an international career in fields such as education, science, culture and communication.

UNESCO regularly announces vacancies across multiple countries for professionals with relevant qualifications, work experience and language proficiency.

Most international positions fall under the Professional (P) category and above, which typically require strong analytical abilities, communication skills and leadership potential.

Entry-level roles, including P-1 and P-2 positions, are designed for early-career professionals. According to general eligibility criteria, P-2 positions usually require at least two years of experience, including some international exposure.

Mid-level positions such as P-3 and P-4 generally require between four and seven years of professional experience in relevant sectors. Senior roles, including P-5, D-1 and D-2 positions, are leadership-level appointments that usually require 10 to 15 years of experience, with significant international work exposure preferred.

UNESCO also recruits National Professional Officers, who work in their home countries but are selected under standards similar to international staff. In addition, consultancy opportunities are available for project-based assignments, research and specialised services, with some roles offering remote work arrangements.

Applicants are generally expected to hold at least a master’s degree or equivalent qualification in areas such as education, culture, science, social sciences, communication or business administration.

Language proficiency is considered essential. Strong command of either English or French is typically required, while knowledge of the second language is often advantageous. Familiarity with Arabic, Chinese, Spanish or Russian can further improve a candidate’s prospects.

UNESCO employees receive competitive salary packages along with benefits that may include family allowances, education support for children, relocation assistance, housing-related benefits and hardship allowances for challenging duty stations.
