Two children lost their lives after drowned in a water-filled construction pit in Karachi, highlighting ongoing safety concerns surrounding unsecured development sites in residential areas.

According to police, the incident occurred near Dhani Bakhsh Goth in the Gulshan-e-Maymar area, where a pit had reportedly been dug as part of ongoing construction work. The excavation later filled with water, creating a hazardous open site.

Officials said the children accidentally fell into the pit and drowned. Rescue efforts were launched after the incident was reported, but both children could not be saved.

Police confirmed that the identities of the deceased had not yet been established. Initial reports suggest the children were estimated to be between 10 and 11 years old.

Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the tragedy, including whether proper safety measures had been implemented at the construction site. Open pits and poorly secured excavation areas have repeatedly raised public concerns in urban areas, particularly in neighbourhoods where children frequently play outdoors.

Residents in the area expressed grief over the incident and called for stricter enforcement of construction safety rules to prevent similar accidents. Many argued that contractors should be required to secure excavation sites with barriers, warning signs, or protective covers.

Urban safety experts have long warned that unattended construction zones pose serious risks, especially during warmer months when water can accumulate in open pits after utility work, drainage issues, or construction activity.

The latest incident has renewed concerns about oversight of construction standards in rapidly expanding parts of Karachi, where residential and infrastructure projects continue at a fast pace. Police said further details would be shared once the children are identified and legal responsibility is determined.

The tragedy serves as another reminder of the importance of enforcing basic site safety protocols to protect surrounding communities from preventable accidents.
