
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif was informed on Monday that Pakistan information technology (IT) exports are projected to reach $4.6 billion during the current fiscal year, as the government highlighted progress in digital infrastructure, connectivity, and innovation.

The briefing was given during a review meeting on the affairs of the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication, which the prime minister chaired in Islamabad.

Officials told the meeting that the number of internet connections in the country has increased significantly, rising from 1.9 million in 2024 to 5.10 million this year, reflecting growing digital adoption across the country.

The prime minister reiterated that strengthening the IT sector and boosting exports remained a key government priority. He stressed that Pakistan’s youth possess strong potential in the technology sector, which must be fully utilised through skill development and investment in digital opportunities.

He directed authorities to accelerate the establishment of Asaan Khidmat Centres in Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir, and to coordinate with provincial governments for expanding similar facilities nationwide. He also emphasised the need to bridge the digital divide between urban and rural areas.
During the briefing, officials highlighted several ongoing initiatives aimed at promoting technology and innovation. These included a recent 5G spectrum auction described as one of the largest globally since 2016, generating $509 million in revenue.
They also informed the meeting about “Indus AI Week,” held in February 2025 across 30 cities, which featured participation from more than 100 international delegates and included 88 technology pavilions showcasing artificial intelligence developments.
In addition, fibre connectivity has reportedly been extended to government schools and health units in Islamabad. The rollout of free public internet hotspots in the capital is in its final stages.

Officials also shared that e-learning pods are being installed at Saidpur Model Village and Fatima Jinnah Park to promote digital education access. The meeting was attended by several federal ministers and senior government officials.
