FBI announces reward in Monica Witt espionage case

Published on: May 15, 2026 9:59 AM

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has announced a reward of up to $200,000 for information leading to the location or arrest of former US Air Force officer Monica Witt, who is accused of spying for Iran.

Witt, a former counterintelligence specialist and US Air Force service member, was charged in 2019 with espionage-related offences for allegedly sharing classified US intelligence information with the Iranian government.

According to the FBI, Witt defected to Iran in 2013 and has remained unaccounted for since then. Authorities believe she provided sensitive information to Iranian officials after leaving the United States.

Daniel Wierzbicki, special agent in charge of the FBI Washington Field Office’s Counterintelligence and Cyber Division, said the agency continues to prioritise the case.

In a statement, Wierzbicki said the FBI believes someone may have information regarding Witt’s whereabouts, particularly during what he described as a critical period in Iran’s history.

He urged anyone with relevant details to contact the bureau, adding that authorities remain committed to locating Witt and pursuing legal action.

Witt joined the US Air Force in 1997 and served until 2008. After leaving active service, she reportedly continued working as a contractor for the US Department of Defense until 2010.

Investigators say Witt later travelled to Iran to attend a conference critical of American moral and cultural values, a trip authorities believe played a role in her eventual defection.

The FBI has accused Witt of working with Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), an influential military institution established following Iran’s 1979 revolution.

In the same 2019 indictment, US authorities also charged four Iranian nationals with conspiracy and identity theft offences linked to cyber and intelligence operations.

The case remains one of the most high-profile US counterintelligence investigations involving a former American military official accused of aiding Iran.

Officials have not disclosed Witt’s current location or whether new intelligence has emerged, but the reward announcement signals renewed efforts to locate her after more than a decade.
