The federal government on Monday lifted nationwide business-hour restrictions ahead of Eidul Adha, allowing commercial centres to operate without time limits. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif approved the exemption until May 31, enabling shops and markets to function freely. The decision matters as it supports trade activity and eases public access during the peak festive shopping season.
According to an official notification issued by the Cabinet Division, the earlier closure timings have been suspended with immediate effect. The exemption covers all major commercial entities including shops, malls, bazaars, bakeries, tandoors, restaurants, and grocery stores. As a result, businesses are now allowed to operate 24 hours a day until the end of the month.

Previously, the government had introduced restricted operating hours under an austerity policy aimed at reducing energy consumption. The policy was implemented across provinces including Sindh, Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Balochistan. However, authorities gradually eased these restrictions in response to economic and public demand.

In recent days, provincial governments also removed fixed closing times for markets and commercial outlets. This coordinated relaxation aligned with the federal decision and ensured uniform business operations across the country. Officials said the move would help boost commercial activity and improve convenience for consumers during Eid preparations.

Meanwhile, authorities noted that earlier restrictions had limited business hours for shops, restaurants, and marriage halls, with strict evening closure times. Delivery and takeaway services had remained unaffected during the policy period. With the latest exemption, the government aims to facilitate economic activity while accommodating increased seasonal demand.
