Karachi police arrest driver in fatal rider hit-and-run case

Published on: May 21, 2026 4:30 PM

Police in Karachi have arrested a car driver accused of fleeing the scene after a fatal traffic accident that killed a food delivery rider in the city’s Defence area earlier this month.

According to South SSP Investigation Touheed Rehman, the suspect was taken into custody after an investigation into the incident registered at Gizri police station on May 10.

Police said the accused, identified as Hamza Shameem, allegedly lost control of his speeding vehicle and struck a motorcycle ridden by a delivery worker employed by a private food company. The rider, identified as Zeeshan, died as a result of the collision.

Officials stated that after the accident, the driver fled the scene along with the vehicle instead of stopping or assisting the victim. Authorities later launched efforts to trace the suspect and the car involved in the incident.

The SSP said police have now recovered the vehicle allegedly used in the accident and shifted it to Gizri police station as part of the investigation. Further legal proceedings against the suspect are under way.

The case had gained attention on social media and in local news reports after videos and details of the fatal accident circulated online. The incident also renewed concerns over reckless driving and road safety in Karachi, particularly involving speeding vehicles in residential and commercial areas.

Earlier reports related to the case noted that the victim’s father had publicly forgiven the driver, though police continued legal proceedings in accordance with applicable laws.

Traffic accidents involving delivery riders have become a growing concern in major cities due to increasing road congestion, long working hours and pressure on riders to complete deliveries quickly.

Authorities say investigations into the Karachi incident are continuing, while police have urged motorists to follow traffic laws and exercise caution to prevent similar accidents.

The suspect is expected to face charges related to reckless driving, negligence and fleeing the scene of a fatal accident.
