China warns US over Cuba pressure campaign

Published on: May 21, 2026 9:07 PM

China has strongly criticized the United States over legal action and increased pressure on Cuba. Beijing urged Washington to immediately stop threats, sanctions, and judicial pressure against Havana. Moreover, China expressed firm support for Cuba against what it called external interference and political coercion.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun made the remarks during a regular press briefing in Beijing. He said the United States must end its policy of using force threats against Cuba. Furthermore, he added that China stands with Havana against foreign interference in its internal affairs. He also rejected the use of judicial systems for political purposes.

The statement came after a US court reportedly indicted former Cuban President Raul Castro and five others. They were accused in connection with a 1996 incident involving the downing of two aircraft. According to reports, the attack resulted in the deaths of four people, including three American citizens. Meanwhile, Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel rejected the charges and called them politically motivated.

China also accused the United States of using sanctions and courts as political tools against Cuba. It warned that such actions increase tensions and harm international trust and stability. In addition, Beijing reiterated its opposition to unilateral pressure and external interference in sovereign states. The situation has further intensified diplomatic friction between Beijing and Washington.

Reports indicate that recent US sanctions have worsened conditions in Cuba’s energy and food sectors. Economic pressure has increased concerns about shortages and humanitarian challenges on the island. Finally, China called for an immediate end to all coercive measures and urged dialogue instead of confrontation.
