US hopeful of deal with Iran

Published on: May 23, 2026 7:49 PM

Marco Rubio said there is a possibility Iran could accept a deal to end the Middle East conflict as early as Saturday. His remarks came amid intensified diplomatic efforts involving Pakistan, Iran, and the United States. The comments also increased speculation that negotiations may have entered a critical stage.

Speaking during a visit to India, Rubio told reporters that progress had been made in ongoing discussions with Tehran. However, he cautioned that no final agreement had yet been reached. Rubio added that further developments could emerge within hours or days as negotiations continue behind closed doors.

The US secretary of state also reiterated Washington’s demands regarding Iran’s nuclear and regional policies. He said the United States expects Iran to fully reopen the Strait of Hormuz and hand over highly enriched uranium. According to Rubio, President Donald Trump still prefers resolving the crisis through diplomacy rather than military action.

Despite diplomatic optimism, Rubio did not rule out the possibility of renewed US military action against Iran. He stated that Trump had made clear the issue would be resolved “one way or the other.” The remarks came as Trump unexpectedly remained in Washington instead of attending his son’s wedding, further fuelling speculation over the sensitive negotiations.

Meanwhile, Asim Munir arrived in Tehran as part of Pakistan’s mediation efforts in the conflict. Pakistan has recently increased diplomatic engagement with Iran and regional powers to help prevent further escalation. Observers believe the coming days could prove decisive for both ceasefire efforts and broader regional stability.
