
ISLAMABAD: The federal government has proposed a development budget exceeding Rs1.1 trillion for the fiscal year 2026-27 (FY27), with significant allocations earmarked for water resources, power projects, transport infrastructure and education initiatives.

According to budget documents, Rs754.9 billion has been proposed under the federal development programme for various ministries and divisions. The allocation reflects the government’s focus on infrastructure development, energy security and public service delivery.
Among the largest allocations, the Ministry of Water Resources is proposed to receive Rs179 billion for ongoing and new development projects. The Power Division has been allocated Rs91 billion to support electricity-related schemes aimed at strengthening the country’s energy sector.

The Cabinet Division is set to receive Rs72 billion for development projects linked to members of parliament, while the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunications has been allocated Rs20 billion for digital infrastructure and technology initiatives.
The Ministry of Interior is proposed to receive Rs16 billion, while development allocations for the Ministry of Defence and the Ministry of Defence Production stand at Rs11 billion and Rs1.1 billion, respectively.
Education remains a key area of spending, with Rs36 billion proposed for the Federal Education Ministry and Rs41.19 billion earmarked for development projects of the Higher Education Commission. The Ministry of Information has been allocated Rs4 billion, while the Ministry of Climate Change is proposed to receive Rs2.78 billion.
The budget documents also propose Rs251.68 billion for provinces and special areas to support regional development programmes.
A separate development allocation of Rs355 billion has been proposed for public corporations. Of this amount, Rs264 billion has been earmarked for the National Highway Authority (NHA) to finance road and highway infrastructure projects across the country.

The National Assembly and Senate are scheduled to meet on June 5 to begin proceedings related to the federal budget. The government aims to complete deliberations and secure parliamentary approval by June 24, ahead of the constitutional deadline of June 30 for implementation from July 1.
