PM Shehbaz lauds strategic ties with Washington

Published on: June 4, 2026 11:41 PM

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday described Pakistan’s relationship with the United States as “true and special” during an event in Islamabad. The remarks matter because they highlight expanding cooperation on security, trade, and regional peace efforts. The relationship directly affects both nations and broader stability across South Asia and the Middle East.

Addressing a ceremony marking the United States’ 250th anniversary, Shehbaz said Islamabad and Washington have maintained close ties for nearly eight decades. He noted that both countries worked together during major historical events, including the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan and the global war on terror. The prime minister said cooperation now extends to trade, investment, agriculture, education, health, science, and energy.

Furthermore, Shehbaz praised US President Donald Trump’s leadership and credited him with helping secure a ceasefire between Pakistan and India following tensions after the Pahalgam incident. He said Trump’s intervention helped prevent further escalation and restored peace in South Asia. The premier added that Pakistan remains grateful for efforts that supported regional stability.

Meanwhile, the prime minister highlighted longstanding American contributions to Pakistan’s development. He cited support for the Green Revolution, the Tarbela Dam project, higher education institutions, and critical infrastructure. He also acknowledged the role of Pakistani-Americans, American universities, and US companies in strengthening economic, educational, and people-to-people ties between the two countries.

In the closing part of his address, Shehbaz said Pakistan is playing a sincere mediating role between the United States and Iran. He expressed hope that ongoing diplomatic efforts would help achieve lasting peace. Separately, US Charge d’Affaires Natalie Baker described Pakistan and the United States as true strategic partners, emphasizing mutual trust, shared interests, and growing cooperation under the current leadership of both countries.
