In her message on World Environment Day, the chief minister urged citizens to actively contribute to environmental conservation by reducing plastic consumption and participating in tree plantation campaigns aimed at creating a cleaner and greener Punjab.

Maryam Nawaz highlighted the provincial government’s ongoing efforts to improve environmental conditions and praised Senior Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb and relevant departments for their work in tackling pollution. She noted that Lahore and several other areas had witnessed improvements in air quality and a noticeable reduction in smog during the past year.

The chief minister directed authorities to continue strict action against the production and use of substandard plastic bags. She also instructed officials to accelerate work on Punjab’s first Environment Observatory project, which is expected to strengthen environmental monitoring and policy planning.

Highlighting technological advancements, Maryam Nawaz said Punjab had become the first province in the region to establish a predictive early warning system for environmental pollution. She added that modern air quality forecasting tools were being used to monitor pollution levels, while a round-the-clock monitoring mechanism had been activated through the province’s first Environment Wall.

She further stated that strict enforcement measures were being implemented against smoke-emitting vehicles, non-compliant brick kilns and the burning of crop residues. According to the chief minister, 30 anti-smog guns are already operational, with additional units being procured for major cities, including Lahore.

Maryam Nawaz also underscored the importance of the “Green Punjab” and “Plant for Pakistan” campaigns, under which large-scale tree plantation drives are continuing throughout the province.

Concluding her message, she urged the public to recognise environmental protection as a shared responsibility and work collectively to preserve natural resources and combat climate change for future generations.
