PM Shehbaz prioritises defence, economic growth

Published on: June 10, 2026 6:42 PM

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has said that generating maximum resources and ensuring adequate funding for defence remains a top priority. He stressed that Pakistan needs stronger financial capacity to address security challenges, including terrorism. The remarks came during a meeting of the National Economic Council.

Addressing the NEC, the prime minister said consultations with provinces on the upcoming budget have continued for several weeks. He added that efforts are underway to expand revenue generation and improve economic planning. Moreover, he said increasing exports is essential for accelerating GDP growth.

Shehbaz Sharif said the macroeconomic situation has improved, but further work is required for sustained stability. He said all decisions are being taken in the national interest through teamwork between the federation and provinces. Furthermore, he reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to the IMF programme despite economic pressures.

The prime minister noted that global oil price volatility has created additional challenges for the economy. However, he said coordinated efforts by provinces helped manage the impact effectively. Additionally, he said timely measures ensured fuel availability despite international disruptions.

Meanwhile, Shehbaz Sharif said Pakistan provided relief worth Rs128 billion to consumers amid rising fuel prices. He stressed that job creation, export growth, and industrial expansion are collective national responsibilities. Still, he said stronger economic productivity remains essential for long-term stability.
