MONTERREY: Sweden delivered a dominant performance in their FIFA World Cup 2026 Group F opener, defeating Tunisia 5-1 at Estadio Monterrey on Sunday to move top of the group.
The Scandinavian side, led by a sharp attacking display, scored five goals in a World Cup match for the first time since 1938, showcasing renewed confidence after a difficult qualifying campaign.
Midfielder Yasin Ayari starred with two outstanding goals, while forwards Alexander Isak and Viktor Gyökeres also found the net in a clinical attacking display that overwhelmed Tunisia’s defence.
Sweden took an early lead in the seventh minute when Ayari capitalised on a defensive error from Tunisia goalkeeper Mouhib Chamakh. Gyökeres’ blocked effort fell kindly for the midfielder, who struck a powerful finish to open the scoring.
Alexander Isak doubled the lead before half-time after a swift counterattack, finishing calmly after being set up by Gyökeres following a turnover deep in Sweden’s half. Tunisia briefly responded through Omar Rekik’s header, but Sweden remained in control.
In the second half, Sweden extended their lead when Isak turned provider, setting up Gyökeres for a simple finish to make it 3-1. Substitute Mattias Svanberg added a fourth after a VAR review confirmed his goal.
Ayari completed the scoring in stoppage time with a stunning long-range strike, sealing a memorable night for Sweden and sending them top of Group F ahead of Japan and the Netherlands.
Despite Tunisia’s defensive struggles, coach Sabri Lamouchi admitted his side made too many errors at the highest level, which proved costly against a clinical opponent.
Sweden coach Graham Potter praised his team’s discipline and attacking chemistry, noting that the partnership between Isak and Gyökeres is expected to improve further as the tournament progresses.
The victory gives Sweden an early advantage in Group F and boosts confidence ahead of their next fixtures in the competition.
