Sooryavanshi loses temper during Sri Lanka A match

Published on: June 16, 2026 11:44 AM

WATCH: Vaibhav Sooryavanshi involved in ugly brawl after India A's Super Over loss to Sri Lanka A

Fifteen-year-old Indian cricket prodigy Vaibhav Sooryavanshi found himself at the centre of controversy after an on-field altercation during an India A match against Sri Lanka A in Dambulla, where he reportedly pushed an opposition player following a heated exchange.

The incident occurred after India’s narrow defeat in a Super Over on Monday, when tensions flared between players from both sides. According to media reports and broadcast footage, Sri Lanka A batter Vishen Halambage exchanged words with Indian players as they walked off the field. Sooryavanshi responded emotionally and was seen pushing the Sri Lankan player before teammates and officials stepped in to defuse the situation.

Sri Lankan’s: “This is international cricket, not IPL.”

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi: “It’s just one match, not the tournament’s end.”

Sri Lanka A wicketkeeper Niroshan Dickwella quickly intervened to separate the players and restore calm, preventing the confrontation from escalating further. Although the teams later exchanged handshakes, television images showed Sooryavanshi visibly frustrated as he left the field.

The young opener has been under intense scrutiny following a breakthrough season in the Indian Premier League 2026, where he emerged as one of the tournament’s standout performers. Playing for Rajasthan Royals, he scored 776 runs, finishing as the competition’s leading run-scorer and earning both the Orange Cap and the Most Valuable Player award.

His rapid rise has drawn comparisons with some of India’s greatest cricketing talents, and he is widely tipped to become one of the youngest players to represent India at the senior international level.

Despite the disciplinary lapse, selectors are expected to continue monitoring his progress closely as India prepares for upcoming tours of Ireland and England later this month. The incident, however, is likely to prompt discussions around temperament and pressure management for emerging young athletes at the highest levels of the game.

Sooryavanshi’s talent remains unquestioned, but the episode serves as a reminder of the challenges that come with early fame and high expectations in international cricket.
