Khawaja Asif urges action against cross-border terrorism

Published on: June 16, 2026 5:20 PM

Defence Minister Khawaja Asif has said that thousands of Pakistani soldiers and civilians have been martyred in terrorism incidents since 2022, which he linked to militant activity operating from Afghan territory. Speaking during a National Assembly session, he stressed that terrorism remains one of Pakistan’s most serious security challenges. He urged greater regional cooperation to prevent militant groups from using cross-border sanctuaries to launch attacks.

Addressing lawmakers during a policy debate, Khawaja Asif rejected claims that Pakistan had failed to engage diplomatically with Afghanistan on security concerns. He stated that Islamabad had repeatedly raised the issue through direct contacts and high-level meetings. According to the minister, Pakistan consistently pursued dialogue and sought practical solutions to improve border security and counterterrorism cooperation.

The defence minister revealed that he personally visited Afghanistan twice and participated in discussions with Afghan authorities regarding security-related matters. He also noted that several rounds of talks took place in other countries, including Turkey and Qatar. These meetings reportedly involved broader regional stakeholders and focused on addressing militant threats, intelligence sharing and measures aimed at reducing cross-border violence.

According to Khawaja Asif, Afghan representatives verbally agreed with many of Pakistan’s concerns during negotiations but were reluctant to formalise commitments through written agreements. He said the discussions covered a wide range of security issues and included participation from senior regional officials. Despite extensive engagement, Pakistan continues to seek stronger assurances regarding actions against militant networks operating near the border.

Reiterating Islamabad’s position, the minister said Pakistan’s central demand remains unchanged and straightforward. He stressed that Pakistan only wants a guarantee that Afghan territory will not be used by groups planning or carrying out attacks against Pakistan. The government believes that effective action on this issue would significantly contribute to regional stability, security cooperation and improved relations between the two neighbouring countries.

Khawaja Asif also highlighted Pakistan’s longstanding support for Afghan citizens over several decades, including hosting refugees and providing humanitarian assistance. He said Pakistan has extended hospitality to millions of Afghans for more than forty years despite economic and security pressures. The minister added that lasting peace and stronger bilateral ties depend on mutual trust, cooperation and a shared commitment to preventing terrorism.
