National assembly pays tribute to Shaheed Benazir Bhutto legacy

Published on: June 21, 2026 2:42 PM

The National Assembly on Sunday marked the 73rd birth anniversary of Shaheed Benazir Bhutto by offering Fateha and paying tribute to her political legacy. Lawmakers highlighted her role in strengthening democracy, promoting public service, and advancing women’s empowerment across Pakistan’s political landscape.

During the session, PPP Parliamentarians lawmaker Aijaz Hussain Jakhrani delivered a detailed tribute and described Benazir Bhutto as a symbol of democratic courage and resilience. He said she consistently defended democratic values and worked throughout her career to strengthen institutions and expand political participation in the country.

Furthermore, Jakhrani recalled that Benazir Bhutto served twice as prime minister and maintained a strong commitment to constitutional rule despite facing significant political challenges. He emphasized that she remained dedicated to democratic principles until her death, which he described as a sacrifice for the cause of democracy.

He also noted that her influence extended beyond Pakistan, saying her leadership had significance for South Asia and the broader international community. In addition, he stressed that her loss was deeply felt not only in Pakistan but also in regions that valued democratic progress and inclusive governance.

Moreover, the lawmaker highlighted her status as the first woman prime minister of Pakistan and the Muslim world, saying she opened doors for women in politics and public life. He added that she promoted social development, defended women’s rights, and worked to strengthen democratic governance throughout her tenure.

In conclusion, members of the assembly offered prayers for her elevation in the hereafter at the request of the Speaker National Assembly Sardar Ayaz Sadiq. Lawmakers reaffirmed that Shaheed Benazir Bhutto continues to be remembered for her sacrifices, leadership, and lasting contributions to Pakistan’s political history.
