Nation commemorates Shaheed Benazir Bhutto’s 73rd birthday

Published on: June 21, 2026 1:02 PM

Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and supporters across the country are observing the 73rd birth anniversary of Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto today, paying tribute to her political legacy and contributions to democracy. The occasion has prompted leaders and party workers to reflect on her role in shaping Pakistan’s democratic journey and advocating for the rights of underrepresented segments of society.

President Asif Ali Zardari described Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto as a courageous leader whose political vision and unwavering commitment to democratic values left a lasting impact on the nation. He said she inspired generations through her support for education, youth empowerment, stronger public services, and greater participation of women in national affairs, while consistently promoting constitutional governance and democratic institutions.

As the first woman Prime Minister of Pakistan and the Muslim world, Benazir Bhutto broke long-standing barriers and created new opportunities for women in public life. Despite facing political challenges and periods of uncertainty, she remained committed to democratic principles and believed firmly in the people’s right to determine their future through free and fair elections.

President Zardari also highlighted her multifaceted personality, saying she successfully balanced her responsibilities as a daughter, mother, wife, political leader, and advocate for peace. He noted that her public service was guided by a strong sense of duty and a belief that progress should benefit ordinary citizens, particularly those who had remained excluded from economic and social development.

Meanwhile, PPP Vice President Senator Sherry Rehman paid tribute to Benazir Bhutto’s courage, vision, and sacrifices, describing her as one of Pakistan’s most influential leaders and a global symbol of democracy. She said Bhutto remained a source of hope for women, marginalized communities, and disadvantaged groups, dedicating her political career to advancing their rights and opportunities.

Recalling the threats Benazir Bhutto faced during her political struggle, Senator Rehman said she continued to lead from the front despite serious security risks. She emphasized that Bhutto’s determination stemmed from her desire to create a more inclusive Pakistan, particularly for women, and said her legacy continues to inspire those striving for democratic values, equality, and social justice.
