Iran reaffirms enrichment rights ahead of Switzerland talks

Published on: June 21, 2026 5:46 PM

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has reaffirmed that Tehran is not pursuing nuclear weapons while maintaining that the country will not surrender its right to enrich uranium. His remarks came ahead of a new round of negotiations between Iranian and American officials in Switzerland aimed at advancing a broader diplomatic understanding.

The president stated that Iran is prepared to provide assurances regarding the peaceful nature of its nuclear programme and is willing to formalize those commitments. However, he stressed that uranium enrichment remains a legitimate national right and insisted that Tehran will continue to defend that position during ongoing negotiations.

Moreover, Pezeshkian said recent diplomatic discussions have produced encouraging developments and suggested that tangible progress could soon emerge on key issues. He expressed confidence that the understandings reached so far are consistent with Iran’s core interests and support the country’s strategic objectives.

A significant element of the evolving framework involves the release of nearly $6 billion in Iranian funds currently frozen in Qatar. According to the president, the financial arrangement forms part of the broader agreement process and is expected to improve Iran’s access to its overseas assets.

Meanwhile, Iranian and US delegations are meeting in Switzerland to discuss implementation measures linked to recent diplomatic understandings. The talks are focused on reducing tensions, addressing economic concerns, and building confidence between the two sides through practical steps and sustained engagement.

Pezeshkian also expressed optimism about the future of the negotiations, stating that outcomes from the current diplomatic process would become clearer in the coming days. He maintained that continued dialogue offers the best path toward resolving outstanding issues and achieving long-term stability in the region.
