US Secretary of State Marco Rubio reaffirmed Washington’s commitment to the United Arab Emirates’ security during talks with UAE President Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan on Wednesday. The discussions focused on the recent US-Iran agreement, regional stability and maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz. The meeting comes as Gulf allies seek assurances over provisions of the accord negotiated with Tehran.
Rubio met the Emirati leader in Abu Dhabi during the first leg of a Gulf tour aimed at addressing regional concerns about the agreement. According to the US State Department, both sides discussed efforts to ensure safe and uninterrupted navigation through the Strait of Hormuz. They also reviewed broader security challenges facing the region following months of conflict.
The US secretary of state praised the UAE’s support and resilience during the recent confrontation involving Iran. He reiterated Washington’s commitment to the security and defence of the Emirates, which was among the countries affected by missile and drone attacks during the conflict. The assurance is expected to be welcomed by Gulf partners seeking stronger security guarantees.
Rubio also stressed that international waterways such as the Strait of Hormuz cannot be subjected to tolls or transit fees under international law. His remarks followed reports that Iran and Oman were considering charges for vessels using the strategic shipping route. The waterway remains critical to global energy supplies and international trade.
The visit highlights continuing concerns among Gulf states regarding the US-Iran memorandum of understanding. Regional governments have questioned the absence of restrictions on Iran’s ballistic missile programme and expressed concerns about a proposed $300 billion reconstruction fund. Rubio is expected to discuss these issues further during upcoming visits to Kuwait and Bahrain as part of his regional diplomatic mission.
