The wildfire broke out near Los Gallardos in Almeria province at around 5pm local time before spreading rapidly into the neighbouring municipality of Bedar. Authorities said extreme heat, low humidity and strong winds fueled the fire, allowing it to advance quickly across the area.
The Andalusia 112 Emergency Service activated Level 1 of the Andalusian Forest Fire Emergency Plan (Plan INFOCA) as the situation worsened. Residents of Bedar and several nearby communities were evacuated, while sections of the A-7 motorway and the N-340A road were temporarily closed to ensure public safety and facilitate emergency operations.
According to regional authorities, several victims were found inside vehicles that had been overtaken by the flames. Emergency officials have not yet released the identities of those killed, pending formal identification by judicial authorities.
Firefighting teams worked throughout the night to contain the wildfire. The operation involved ground crews, helicopters and firefighting aircraft, with emergency services remaining on high alert as difficult weather conditions continued to challenge containment efforts.
Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the wildfire. Officials said forensic teams would work to identify the victims while investigators examine the origin of the blaze.
Southern Europe has experienced increasingly severe wildfire seasons in recent years, with prolonged heatwaves and dry conditions raising the risk of rapidly spreading fires. Emergency authorities have urged residents in affected areas to follow evacuation orders and remain alert to official updates as firefighters continue efforts to bring the blaze under control.
