Netanyahu praises Argentina amid World Cup and diplomatic spotlight

Published on: July 10, 2026 7:37 PM

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has voiced his support for Argentina during the FIFA World Cup while praising Argentine President Javier Milei for strengthening ties with Israel. Speaking during a recent podcast interview, Netanyahu described Milei as Argentina’s “real superstar” and called him one of Israel’s strongest international allies because of his consistent diplomatic support.

Netanyahu’s remarks come as relations between Israel and Argentina continue to expand under Milei’s leadership. Both countries recently announced the Isaac Accords, an initiative designed to deepen cooperation in diplomacy, trade, security, and other strategic sectors. The Israeli prime minister has repeatedly welcomed Milei’s pro-Israel policies and his commitment to closer bilateral engagement.

Meanwhile, Argentina remains in the international spotlight following its dramatic 3-2 victory over Egypt in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16. Although the defending champions secured a place in the quarterfinals, the match generated widespread debate after several refereeing decisions sparked criticism from fans, football analysts, and former players.

Many supporters questioned the use of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR), arguing that some key incidents involving Egypt received different treatment from similar situations during the match. Social media discussions intensified as fans raised concerns about consistency in officiating, while some claimed the controversial decisions affected confidence in the tournament’s fairness. FIFA had not issued a detailed public explanation regarding the officiating at the time.

Although Netanyahu’s comments focused primarily on Argentina’s political leadership rather than football, they attracted additional attention because of the country’s ongoing World Cup campaign. As Argentina prepares for the quarterfinals, the nation continues to draw global interest through both its diplomatic developments and its performances on football’s biggest stage.
