According to local authorities, the new registration plates are designed to clearly identify both commercially operated autonomous vehicles and those currently undergoing testing. Officials said the initiative will make it easier for law enforcement agencies, regulators and road users to distinguish driverless vehicles from conventional cars.
Commercial autonomous vehicles providing public services will display number plates marked with the words “Auto Drive”, while vehicles participating in testing and development programmes will carry plates labelled “Test.” Authorities have also adopted a distinctive blue colour for the new plates to ensure they are easily recognisable on public roads.
Officials said the dedicated plates will strengthen traffic monitoring, improve safety measures and support the gradual expansion of autonomous mobility services in Abu Dhabi. The system is also expected to help emergency responders and traffic management authorities identify driverless vehicles more efficiently during routine operations or in the event of road incidents.
The initiative forms part of Abu Dhabi’s broader strategy to encourage innovation in smart transportation and prepare road infrastructure for emerging vehicle technologies. Authorities are continuing to expand both the testing and commercial deployment of autonomous vehicles as the emirate seeks to position itself as a regional leader in advanced mobility solutions.
The new registration system is expected to provide greater transparency as more self-driving vehicles begin operating on public roads. Officials believe the clearly marked plates will increase public awareness and confidence while allowing regulators to monitor the performance and safety of autonomous transport services more effectively.
