Sindh launches crackdown on hoarders, recovers 150,000 tonnes of wheat

Published on: July 17, 2026 12:37 AM

Sindh Senior Minister and Provincial Minister for Information, Transport and Mass Transit Sharjeel Inam Memon said that there was a bumper wheat harvest in Punjab and Sindh, however, with the arrival of the crop, profiteers and hoarders bought and stored a large quantity of wheat, due to which the required quantity of wheat could not be stored at the government level.

Addressing a press conference in Karachi, Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon said that the Sindh government had decided to crack down on this situation, during which one lakh and a half thousand tons of wheat were recovered from hoarders and the hoarders from whom this wheat was recovered were paid government rates.

He warned the hoarders who were storing wheat to hand over the wheat they had to the government so that the people could get relief. According to him, after the stored wheat came into the market, prices decreased by 13 percent.

Sharjeel Inam Memon said that the Sindh government took immediate notice of the murder of Dr. Akash Kumar and the police took effective action and arrested three accused, Anil, Ram Chand and Suresh, while the vehicle used in the incident was also recovered. He appreciated the performance of the police and said that the government is ensuring immediate action against every serious crime. Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon strongly condemned the statements made against the martyrs and ghazis and said that the Pakistani forces have defended the country on every front and in the Pak-India war, the Pakistan Army, Navy and Air Force defeated the enemy in a resounding manner. He said that our soldiers go on duty with the spirit of defending the homeland and consider martyrdom an honor for themselves. He politely requested Maulana Fazlur Rehman to withdraw his statement, because according to him, this statement received significant coverage in the Indian media, which benefited the enemy. He said that martyrs and ghazis are heroes of the entire nation, their status cannot be harmed by any statement, while employment in the Pakistani army is done not just for salary but under the spirit of defending the homeland.

Sharjeel Inam Memon said that during the Indo-Pak war, the entire nation was united and every class played its role on its own front. He said that the PPP always struggled against dictatorship but never spoke against its own forces. He reminded that Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari had said during a foreign visit, on a question about Imran Khan, that he is my Prime Minister, who is an example of national unity. He said that Pakistan is the only country in the Islamic world that no one looks at with a dirty eye, the main reason for which was Zulfikar Ali Bhutto’s desire to make the country a nuclear power. He said that this country belongs to all of us, no one should overstep their boundaries and all political, military, commercial and social classes should have the same stance on the national interest.

While answering questions, Sharjeel Inam Memon said that Maulana Fazlur Rehman is an experienced politician, if he withdraws his statement, his stature will increase further. He said that whatever decisions the Prime Minister takes in the current circumstances, he will take them keeping in mind the country’s economy. Regarding wheat, he said that Punjab and Sindh have made their own policies, he does not think that wheat went from Punjab to Afghanistan, however, there is evidence of wheat going from Sindh to Punjab. He clarified that according to the constitution, no province has the authority to stop wheat going to another province. He said that the matter of Priya Kumari is very serious and the Sindh government’s stance on it has already come to the fore. Addressing Mustafa Kamal, he said that if he wants to stage a sit-in, first resign from the federal ministry, leave his seat and face a by-election. Regarding water shortage, he said that the Sindh government has written letters to the Prime Minister and the federal government several times demanding that Sindh be provided with its share of water and that IRSA fulfill its constitutional responsibility and ensure fair distribution of water among the provinces as per the agreement.

Sharjeel Inam Memon said that the PPP made sacrifices of its leadership, endured hardships but never spoke against national institutions. He said that MMA was also among the parties that installed Pervez Musharraf in the Presidency, including the uniform. Talking about the importance of Karachi, he said that this city is the foundation of the country’s economy, inter-district motorways are being built in Punjab, but the Sindh Federation is not building any major motorway project, which is an injustice to the province and the country’s economy.

On a question about Nasir Shah’s health, he said that the provincial minister was in Dubai where his health deteriorated due to a blood clot in the brain and he was shifted to a hospital there for treatment. He said that this does not mean that there are no treatment facilities in Sindh, but even today there are modern and state-of-the-art hospitals in the province.

He added that those who speak against the unity of the province actually want a clash so that their dead politics can get new life, however, the government will refrain from any such step. In response to another question, he said that IRSA should fulfill its responsibility and provide all the provinces with their legitimate share of water as per the agreement.
