PM Abbasi calls for scrutiny of judges before appointment

Published on: January 22, 2018 3:48 PM

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi on Monday called for following in the footsteps of the United States (US) and adopting strict criteria for the selection of judges.

While speaking to a delegation of Parliamentary Reporters’ Association (PRA), PM Abbasi said that scrutiny of the judges should be ensured to eliminate chances of appointing incapable individuals for the job.

“People should know who the judges are, they have to decide matters of life and death, matters worth billions of rupees, they have to make historic judgements; if a weak individual is appointed a judge then the repercussions have to be borne,” Abbasi said.

Abbasi added that in the US, there is thorough investigation and examination before appointment of a judge.

He also confirmed that former prime minister and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) president Nawaz Sharif’s picture will be printed on the party’s campaign posters for general elections 2018 adding that “No one will vote for Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz on Shehbaz Sharif or my photo.”
