Federer produced an almost-impeccable performance on the center court, beating France’s Adrian Marinaro 6-0, 6-4 and 7-5 and booking a berth in the last eight.
Hitherto, Federer has won 32 consecutive sets at Wimbledon, two sets short of this personal best back in 2006. Interestingly, he is five sets behind Nadal’s record of 37 consecutive sets at Roland Garros. However, the men’s Grand slam record for most consecutive sets won is held by Borg, which is 41 sets at Roland Garros.
Federer could equal Borg’s record of 41 consecutive sets, if he manages to win his quarterfinals, semifinals and final matches in straight sets.
He will play Kevin Anderson, eight seed, in his quarterfinal match as he will attempt to win his 9th Wimbledon title this year.
If we take a look at the head-to-head record between the two it is in favor of Federer 4-0. Nonetheless, Kevin Anderson’s big serve along with a solid forehand and backhand could test Federer.
On the side of the draw, Nadal outclassed Jiri Vesely 6-3 6-3 6-4 in the round of 16, and he will be playing Juan Martin Del Potro, who defeated Giles Simon, for a place in the semifinals.
It has been seven years since Nadal featured in a final at Wimbledon. It is important to note, the two- times Champion featured in five finals at Wimbledon from 2006 till 2011. However, he hasn’t been able to make it past fourth round till this year.
Federer and Nadal are on course to meet in the final on Sunday. We could see a repeat of the 2008 final, which was considered the greatest final of all time my many, when the two players pushed each other to their limits with Nadal prevailing in the end.
