Valencia look to break Barcelona curse as Messi oozes with confidence

Published on: October 6, 2018 1:15 PM

Spanish club Valencia will be looking to break their 12-year-old win-less record against champions Barcelona at Mestalla as the two teams square-off in Round 8 of the Spanish league.

The Blaugranas have not lost to Valencia at Mestalla since 2006-07 when they managed to beat Rijkaard’s Barca 2-1. Since then, it has been either Barcelona or draws.

Things could, however, dramatically change because the Spanish champions are having a shaky run in the league. In the past 3 fixtures, Barcelona have lost once against Leganes and drew twice against Athletic Bilbao and Girona.

The good news for Barcelona is that Lionel Messi is in red-hot form. The little Argentine scored 2 goals and hit the bar twice to lead his club to a 4-2 win at Wembley against Tottenham Hotspurs in the UEFA Champions League.

Messi has also scored 5 goals in the league this season in 7 games, making him the third highest goal-scorer in the league. Sevilla’s Andre Silva is top goal-scorer with 7-in-7, while Girona’s Christhian Stuani is second with 6.

Barcelona will face Valencia away from home on Sunday at 11:45pm Pakistan Standard Time (PST).
