‘You can’t confine an eagle to a cage and I showed them that’: Khabib on post-fight melee

Published on: October 9, 2018 1:07 PM

UFC Lightweight Champion Khabib Nurmagomedov spoke for the second time after his UFC post-fight melee on Sunday. For the Eagle, the fight against two-division champion Conor McGregor was personal, and if there was any doubt about it, what Khabib did after smashing Conor must have made it all crystal clear.

After cranking the former 2-division champion in the fourth round and winning his 27th professional MMA fight, a fired-up Khabib turned towards McGregor’s team-mate Dillon Danis, had a heated exchange of words with him and eventually jumped outside the cage stirring a massive brawl.

In his post-fight talk to the press, Khabib apologised for his actions but reiterated that it was all caused by McGregor’s verbal jabs against his family, his father and his religion. Khabib, who is now in his Russian hometown of Makhachkala, did not show any signs of peace with the McGregor team even after he has beaten him quite dominantly.

Speaking to a packed football stadium in his hometown, Khabib said: “You can not confine an eagle to the cage. And I showed them that.” He added that he had prayed to God to allow him and McGregor fight one another so he could teach the Irishman a lesson.

“I prayed to God that we both get locked inside the cage. I prayed that I don’t get injured, make weight and then give him a beating of his life. We all saw what happened, when he in bad position, he always tap,” Khabib said, according to Russian paper RT.

The Eagle added that there is a difference between his people and Conor’s. He added that the people of Dagestan have gone through so much, and that his ancestors have seen such tough times that now Dagestanis are unbreakable.

Speaking about the post-fight melee, Khabib said: “I know there is a lot of talk going on about what I did. Some people say I did wrong, while some say that I did right. That’s okay.”
