Twitter slams Maradona over anti-Messi remarks

Published on: October 15, 2018 5:26 PM

Argentina legend Diego Maradona caused a stir on social media after his statements against Barcelona captain Lionel Messi angered fans. Maradona had said that an individual like Messi who goes to the toilet 20 times before the start of a fixture can never be a leader.

Spanish newspaper AS reported that Maradona slammed Messi for being a poor leader. “It’s useless to make a leader of a guy who goes to the bathroom 20 times before a game,” he told TV programme The Last Word Mexico, as quoted by AS.

What makes it interesting is that a couple of days before criticising Messi, Maradona had actually praised his compatriot and blasted Messi’s Argentina team-mates for not standing up for their captain in tough times. It is not sure whether Maradona changes opinions pretty quick or old-age is getting to him, the social media, however, sure knows a thing or two about the veteran.

Some Barcelona fans believe Maradona is saying so to stay relevant and to steal Leo Messi’s spotlight. If that’s the case, he’s totally failing because this is Messi’s era.

Others believe that Maradona was ‘drugged’ when he said those things. Not to blame anyone, Maradona has sure developed a ‘high’ reputation.

The contrast between Maradona and Messi is so wild. Messi will probably seize to exist from all of television and social media once he retires, meanwhile Diego is as high as a kite talking smack on live television. Don’t do drugs kids. https://t.co/zMQEbDHTr8

Lionel Messi’s cousin has also come forward to defend the Barcelona star.

Lionel Messi's cousin, Maxi Biancucchi lashes out at Maradona for his criticism of Messi;

"Discrediting Leo is ignorant. It’s sad to see someone who brags about being a leader talking so badly about our current best player and surely will be for a very long time." pic.twitter.com/eY5vKk6aSd
