Kamran Akhtar leads 53rd UNIDO meeting, Pakistan marks historic win

Published on: June 30, 2025 4:12 PM

Pakistan has received another major international honor as it was elected Chair of the 53rd meeting of the United Nations Industrial Development Board (UNIDO). This marks the first time Pakistan holds this important position. Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Kamran Akhtar, officially assumed the role and its responsibilities starting today.

Diplomatic sources say this election is a clear sign of the global community’s strong trust and confidence in Pakistan’s diplomatic capabilities. Pakistan actively participates in UNIDO’s initiatives and is planning to launch several development projects under the Country Partnership Program during 2025. These projects aim to boost industrial growth and sustainable development in Pakistan.

Pakistan’s growing role at the UN is further reflected by its recent appointments in June 2025. Pakistan was named Chair of the UN Security Council Committee responsible for monitoring sanctions on the Taliban under Resolution 1988 (2011).

Pakistan was appointed Vice-Chair of the UN Counter-Terrorism Committee and Co-Chair of two informal Security Council working groups focused on documentation and sanctions.

These roles enhance Pakistan’s influence on key global issues such as peace, security, and sustainable development, underlining the country’s commitment to playing an active and responsible role in the international community.
