Ceasefire proposal gains momentum as Netanyahu heads to white house

Published on: July 7, 2025 1:49 PM

Fresh details have surfaced about a proposed Gaza ceasefire deal, just as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu prepares for high-level talks at the White House. The plan outlines a 60-day ceasefire period during which Hamas would release hostages and Israel would pull back its forces.

The document, shared with the Associated Press by multiple sources, includes provisions for Hamas to return 10 living hostages and 18 bodies. In return, Israel would withdraw to buffer zones and allow significant humanitarian aid, to be delivered by the UN and Red Crescent. Notably, former President Donald Trump would personally guarantee Israel’s adherence to the ceasefire.

Trump’s involvement aims to build trust with Hamas, especially after Israel resumed fighting following the last truce. However, the plan does not guarantee a permanent end to the war, a demand Hamas insists on. Talks for a longer peace are expected to take place during the two-month ceasefire period.

Meanwhile, the situation on the ground remains dire. On Sunday, Israeli airstrikes killed at least 38 Palestinians, including entire families in Gaza City and Muwasi. Israel confirmed targeting Hamas fighters and claimed to have hit 130 sites across the territory in 24 hours.

In northern Gaza, where food is dangerously scarce, Israel’s cabinet has agreed to send more aid. This move comes after months of limited access to the region, especially since the previous ceasefire collapsed in March.

As the conflict approaches its tenth month, the death toll has crossed 57,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry. The proposed truce could offer a brief relief, but key disagreements between Hamas and Israel still stand in the way of a long-term peace.
