Modi slammed as Afghan FM bars women journalists in Delhi

Published on: October 11, 2025 6:32 PM

The exclusion of women journalists from a press conference held by Afghan Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi in New Delhi sparked strong criticism in India. Opposition parties, media groups, and civil society condemned the move. Many viewed it as a clear example of gender discrimination. The event took place without any female journalists present, raising serious concerns about press freedom and women’s rights in India.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi for remaining silent. He said Indian women deserve equal participation in all fields. Gandhi added that the incident shows Modi is too weak to defend women’s rights. His remarks gained support from several opposition figures. They argued the government failed to protect basic democratic values.

Priyanka Gandhi also demanded an explanation from the Modi government. She said the incident sends a damaging message to all Indian women. According to her, allowing such exclusion undermines India’s global image. She stressed that women must be included in all professional spaces. Other Congress members echoed similar concerns.

Senior Congress leader P. Chidambaram urged male journalists to walk out in protest during the event. He said staying silent only encourages discrimination. Critics linked the move to the Taliban’s known stance on women’s rights. They warned it sets a dangerous precedent for India.
