Jadeja spins India close to victory over South Africa

Published on: November 15, 2025 7:00 PM

KOLKATA: Ravindra Jadeja took four crucial wickets as India closed in on victory against South Africa on day two of the first Test. South Africa ended at 93-7, still 63 runs behind in their second innings. Fifteen wickets fell during a dramatic day at Eden Gardens.

India struggled earlier, bowled out for 189 in response to South Africa’s 159. KL Rahul’s gritty 39 remained the top score. Vice-captain Rishabh Pant contributed 27, while Washington Sundar added 29 in a disciplined partnership. Skipper Shubman Gill retired hurt with a neck issue, missing much of the day’s play.

Jadeja starred with the ball, removing Wiaan Mulder, Tony de Zorzi, and Tristan Stubbs in a decisive spell. Kuldeep Yadav also struck, dismissing the openers around tea. Spinner Simon Harmer had earlier helped South Africa fight back, finishing with 4-30.

Despite the challenging pitch, India’s bowlers adapted well. Jasprit Bumrah and Jansen picked key wickets to keep the Proteas under pressure. India’s total gave them a slender 30-run lead, but Jadeja’s performance has shifted momentum strongly in favor of the hosts.
