The Supreme Court of Bangladesh has requested the Army Headquarters to deploy troops to secure the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) ahead of the verdict in a high-profile case against ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and two of her top aides. The court administration had previously sent a similar request last Thursday, coinciding with the announcement of the verdict date.

The ICT-1 is set to deliver its verdict today in the case related to alleged crimes against humanity during last year’s July uprising. Prosecutors confirmed that portions of the judgement read in court may be broadcast live on Bangladesh Television (BTV) and private channels, subject to final approval.
Tensions escalated on Sunday after several crude bombs exploded in Dhaka, although no casualties were reported. The blasts added to an atmosphere of unrest following days of protests and violence in the capital.
Security measures have been significantly heightened across Dhaka, in Hasina’s ancestral district of Gopalganj, and two neighbouring districts. The police and Rapid Action Battalion have been deployed around major intersections and key buildings, with Border Guard Bangladesh personnel reinforcing local authorities. Authorities have warned that any attempts at arson or violent acts will be met with force.

Hasina, 78, is being tried in absentia, having fled to India after her ouster in August 2024. She denies any wrongdoing in connection with the crackdown on student protests.
