UK warns of rising Russian threat to Europe

Published on: December 12, 2025 11:30 PM

The United Kingdom has warned Europe of a growing threat from Russia. Defense Minister Alister Carns said war could reach Europe’s doorstep. Britain is planning to reduce reliance on the U.S. for defense and strengthen its own military readiness.

Carns stated that NATO countries must increase spending to counter potential Russian aggression. He emphasized that armies respond to attacks, and societies, industries, and economies must also be prepared. The minister urged Europe to take the threat seriously.

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte also called Russia Europe’s next possible target. He advised Western nations to prepare as they did during the first and second world wars. The warning comes amid increased cyberattacks and espionage targeting British defense personnel.

To counter threats, Britain plans a new Defense Counter-Intelligence Unit. The unit will include the UK, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the U.S., centralizing intelligence sharing. Officials hope the unit will strengthen responses to aggressive acts by Russia, China, Iran, and North Korea.
