Israeli attack kills six at Gaza shelter, ceasefire at risk

Published on: December 20, 2025 3:30 PM

At least six Palestinians were killed and several injured when Israeli tank shells hit a school-turned-shelter hosting a wedding in Gaza City’s Tuffah neighborhood. The attack occurred amid US-led efforts to advance a fragile Gaza ceasefire, highlighting the ongoing risk to civilians despite diplomatic progress.

Local sources said the strike targeted the second floor of the shelter while displaced families were attending a wedding gathering. The incident adds to hundreds of ceasefire violations documented since the US-mediated agreement began in October, underscoring the volatile security situation in Gaza.

US officials, including special envoy Steve Witkoff and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, held talks in Miami with representatives from Qatar, Turkey, Egypt, and the UAE. The negotiations focus on establishing a Palestinian technocratic committee, forming a foreign-led “Board of Peace,” and deploying an international policing force to enforce the truce. Rubio stressed the need to complete phase one to secure donor support for reconstruction and humanitarian aid.

Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reportedly convened a security meeting to assess the next phase of the ceasefire, while attacks continued across Gaza. Shelling and airstrikes struck eastern Khan Younis and southern Gaza City, including areas inside the “yellow line,” violating ceasefire terms. Naval fire targeted fishing boats, and artillery attacks killed three more Palestinians, including a woman.

Aid organizations warned that the attacks, combined with the ongoing blockade, worsen Gaza’s humanitarian crisis. Displaced families remain without essential support, leaving the territory’s population highly vulnerable amid continued conflict.
