Senator Palwasha Khan moves NCCIA over alleged online smear campaign

PPP's Palwasha Khan calls FIA, NCCIA 'corrupt institutions'
Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Senator Palwasha Khan has approached the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA), alleging that she has been targeted in an organised online defamation and harassment campaign aimed at damaging her reputation. According to media reports, the senator filed a formal complaint under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA), seeking legal action against those involved.

In her application, Senator Khan stated that false, defamatory and abusive material was circulated against her across multiple social media platforms. She alleged that fabricated videos were created and shared deliberately to malign her credibility and misrepresent her public stance and political role.

The complaint further claimed that the campaign involved coordinated use of gendered language, threats and harassment. According to the senator, fake accounts and bot networks were deployed to amplify malicious content, with specific hashtags used to trend the material and widen its reach. She maintained that the online attacks were targeted and intensified during the performance of her official parliamentary duties.

Describing the effort as a calculated attempt at character assassination, Senator Palwasha Khan urged the NCCIA to identify those responsible, dismantle the networks involved and ensure accountability under the law. She requested swift action to prevent further harm and set a precedent against organised online harassment.

The NCCIA is expected to examine the complaint and proceed in accordance with relevant cybercrime laws and regulations. Officials have not yet commented publicly on the timeline for the inquiry.

The complaint follows a recent heated exchange between Senator Palwasha Khan and Federal Minister for Communications Aleem Khan during a meeting of the Senate Standing Committee on Communications. A video of the confrontation later circulated widely online.

During the meeting, the senator questioned whether a newly constructed road project was designed to benefit a specific private housing society, asserting that raising such concerns was part of her constitutional role. Aleem Khan strongly rejected the allegation, calling it a personal insult and denying any wrongdoing.

The exchange escalated into sharp remarks from both sides, with the senator accusing the minister of losing his temper, while insisting that her questions were about accountability and public interest rather than personal attacks.
