Karachi Mayor Says Gul Plaza Fire Under Control - Social Diary Pakistan

KARACHI: The search operation at Gul Plaza, site of Karachi’s deadly shopping centre fire, concluded on Tuesday after 10 days of rescue and relief efforts. The scorched building has now been sealed, authorities said.

Experts from the Lahore Forensic Laboratory and the Pakistan Engineering Council (PEC) will inspect the structure, a process expected to take more than a week, according to the Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA). The building had already been declared unsafe and dilapidated prior to the inspection. The forensic team will also investigate the cause of the fire.

Sindh Cabinet has approved a compensation of PKR 10 million for the families of those who lost their lives in the Gul Plaza tragedy, while arrangements are being made for alternative spaces for the affected shopkeepers so they can get back on their feet.#GulPlaza @sharjeelinam pic.twitter.com/UizQe1gfop

The blaze, which broke out on January 17, claimed at least 73 lives, with 23 victims identified through DNA testing. The fire engulfed the sprawling complex, home to around 1,200 family-run shops selling wedding attire, toys, crockery, and other goods. An FIR has been registered at Nabi Bux Police Station, citing negligence and carelessness. Sindh Home Minister Ziaul Hassan Lanjar noted that sabotage or terrorism cannot be ruled out, and anti-terror provisions will be added if evidence emerges.

Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah announced plans to rebuild the shops within two years, assuring owners that they would receive an equivalent number of shops post-reconstruction. Families of the deceased are set to receive Rs10 million each as compensation, with temporary arrangements for shopowners including 500 shops in one building and 350 in another, rent-free for one year.

The provincial cabinet also approved Rs10 million in interest-free loans for shopowners to restart their businesses, alongside Rs500,000 for utility expenses via the Karachi commissioner. A sub-committee, led by CM Shah, will review the inquiry report and determine further action.

“The tragedy is immense. There is no price for human life,” CM Shah said, stressing that immediate steps will be taken once the committee’s report is submitted to ensure justice.
