Pakistan raises $507m in 5G auction

Published on: March 10, 2026 9:32 PM

Pakistan moved closer to launching 5G services after the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority completed the third round of the national spectrum auction. The bidding generated $507 million in revenue from telecom operators. Officials say the move will strengthen digital infrastructure and expand high-speed internet access nationwide.

The auction took place in Islamabad and offered around 600 MHz of spectrum for next-generation mobile services. Three major telecom operators participated in the competitive bidding process. Officials described the auction as a key step toward improving connectivity and accelerating Pakistan’s digital transformation.

Several senior officials attended the event, including Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, IT Minister Shaza Fatima Khawaja, and Information Minister Attaullah Tarar. PTA Chairman Hafeez Ur Rehman also oversaw the process. Authorities said the government initially plans to introduce 5G services in five major cities.

During the auction, strong demand emerged across multiple spectrum bands. Zong secured 110 MHz of spectrum, Ufone obtained 180 MHz, and Jazz acquired 190 MHz. Officials said most lots in the 2300 MHz and 2600 MHz bands were fully booked, while the 3.5 GHz band also attracted strong demand.

IT Minister Shaza Fatima said 5G services are expected to launch in major cities within six months. She described the auction as Pakistan’s largest spectrum allocation and a milestone for the digital economy. Officials added that improved connectivity could support emerging technologies and boost IT exports in the coming years.
