WhatsApp Web to introduce dozens of new desktop themes

Published on: April 15, 2026 3:00 PM

WhatsApp announces a freshly redesigned interface for the web client | WABetaInfo

Users of WhatsApp Web may soon see a major upgrade in customization options, as parent company Meta is reportedly developing nearly 50 new desktop themes.

According to reports from WABetaInfo, the upcoming feature will allow users to personalise their chat interface on desktop, bringing it closer to the mobile app experience. Currently, WhatsApp Web offers limited visual customization, with dark mode being one of the few notable options introduced in recent years.

The new update is expected to include around 49 different themes in testing, along with a default light theme, effectively offering up to 50 variations. These themes will enable users to modify chat backgrounds, message bubble colours, and overall interface appearance.

The move reflects Meta’s broader efforts to enhance cross-platform consistency and improve user experience across devices. While WhatsApp mobile users have long enjoyed features such as custom wallpapers and chat colours, desktop users have had fewer options to personalise their interface.

With the introduction of these themes, users will be able to assign different visual styles to individual chats or groups, making conversations easier to distinguish at a glance. However, the changes will remain local to the user’s interface and will not affect how chats appear to others.

It remains unclear whether the new themes will sync with mobile settings, as no official confirmation has been provided. Additionally, there is no confirmed timeline for the feature’s public rollout, though it is expected to appear in beta versions before wider release.

The update signals a continued push by Meta to make WhatsApp Web a more feature-rich and user-friendly platform, narrowing the gap between desktop and mobile functionality.
