King Charles heads to US despite tensions

Published on: April 27, 2026 4:18 PM

Britain’s King Charles III arrived in the United States on Monday for a four-day visit with Queen Camilla. The trip comes amid tensions over the Iran conflict and a recent shooting at a media gala. The high-profile visit affects diplomatic ties between close allies Britain and the United States.

The visit marks the 250th anniversary of US independence and is the first by a British monarch in two decades. King Charles will meet President Donald Trump privately and attend a state dinner at the White House. He is also scheduled to address Congress, becoming only the second British monarch to do so.

However, the visit unfolds against a backdrop of political strain between the two countries over the US-Israeli war on Iran. President Trump had criticised Britain’s stance, deepening tensions in the longstanding alliance. Despite this, officials from both sides have stressed the importance of maintaining strong bilateral relations.

Moreover, a shooting at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner has added security concerns to the trip. Authorities believe senior US officials were the intended targets in the incident. Buckingham Palace confirmed the visit would proceed after security reviews by both governments.

The royal couple will also travel to New York and Virginia during the visit. They will honour victims of the September 11 attacks and highlight environmental efforts. British officials hope the visit will reinforce the “special relationship” despite ongoing political differences.
