AJK elections slated for July 27; EC issues code

Published on: June 5, 2026 8:43 PM

Azad Jammu and Kashmir will hold general elections on July 27, election authorities announced on Friday. The polls are significant for ensuring democratic representation and political stability in the region. Political parties, candidates, government departments, and voters will be directly affected by the election process.

Chief Election Commissioner Ghulam Mustafa Mughal announced the election schedule during a press conference. He said the Election Commission would ensure a transparent and impartial electoral process. Moreover, he pledged equal opportunities for all political parties and independent candidates. The commission aims to maintain public confidence throughout the election period.

Following the announcement, a comprehensive code of conduct came into immediate effect across Azad Jammu and Kashmir. The Election Commission banned new appointments and transfers in government departments. Additionally, authorities cannot announce new development projects during the election period. These restrictions seek to prevent misuse of public resources and ensure fair competition.

According to the official schedule, candidates may submit nomination papers from June 9 to June 19. Election officials will scrutinize applications under established legal procedures. Meanwhile, political parties have started organizing campaigns and preparing candidates. The nomination phase is expected to shape the electoral landscape before voting day.
