Punjab enforces section 144 for muharram security measures

Published on: June 11, 2026 7:00 PM

The Punjab government has enforced Section 144 across Punjab from 1st to 10th Muharram to maintain peace, law and order, and prevent any sectarian tensions during religious gatherings. Authorities implemented these restrictions to ensure public safety and protect lives and property during processions and other observances across the province. Officials emphasized that the decision aims to promote harmony while reducing risks of unrest or provocative activities during the sensitive period. The move reflects a coordinated effort to strengthen security arrangements ahead of Muharram across all districts.

Under the enforcement, authorities have strictly banned the display of weapons and firearms in public spaces without prior permission from relevant officials throughout the province. In addition, inflammatory slogans, gestures, and any expressions that may hurt religious sentiments or encourage sectarian division have also been completely prohibited. The government further warned against spreading hate speech through social media or other communication platforms during the religious period. Officials stated that violations will lead to strict legal action under applicable laws to ensure full compliance.

Moreover, the Punjab Home Department has introduced movement-related restrictions to manage crowds and ensure safe passage of Muharram processions in all major cities and towns. Double riding on motorcycles will remain banned on 9th and 10th Muharram except for women, senior citizens, and law enforcement personnel performing duties. Residents have also been barred from constructing temporary rooftop structures or collecting hazardous objects along procession routes to prevent any potential security threats. These steps aim to minimize risks and maintain orderly movement during religious gatherings.

Authorities have also restricted spectators from standing on rooftops, balconies, or shop windows along procession routes to avoid accidents and ensure smooth flow of participants. Officials said these preventive measures are necessary to avoid any untoward incidents and maintain discipline during large public gatherings across the province. The Home Department has instructed that all restrictions must be widely communicated through media to ensure public awareness and compliance. Security agencies have been directed to monitor implementation and respond promptly to any violations.

The government reiterated that enforcement of Section 144 is essential for maintaining peace, preventing sectarian conflict, and ensuring safe religious observance during Muharram across the province. Officials stressed that protecting citizens remains the top priority, and strict monitoring will continue throughout the ten-day period to ensure compliance. Any violation of these restrictions will result in immediate legal action under relevant laws without exception. The administration has called for public cooperation to ensure a peaceful and secure environment during the religious month.
