Trump defends Iran deal amid criticism

Published on: June 18, 2026 6:04 PM

US President Donald Trump has defended the newly signed US-Iran peace agreement, dismissing critics as “fools”. He said the deal strengthens global markets and supports stability in the Middle East. His remarks come as implementation talks on the agreement are set to begin in Switzerland.

Trump said critics who accused him of being too lenient on Iran were wrong. He argued that the agreement had already produced positive economic signals, including falling oil prices and record market performance. He added that those opposing the deal were motivated by jealousy or ignorance.

The US and Iran recently signed a peace accord aimed at ending the Middle East war and reopening the Strait of Hormuz. The agreement also outlines a two-month negotiation period to finalize broader issues, including Iran’s nuclear programme. Global stakeholders have welcomed the reduction in regional tensions.

Meanwhile, Iranian and US officials are preparing for follow-up talks in Switzerland to define implementation steps. The process is expected to involve mediators and technical experts from multiple countries. Authorities say the agreement’s success will depend on both political commitment and detailed enforcement mechanisms.

The deal has drawn mixed reactions internationally, with supporters praising de-escalation while critics question its long-term impact. Despite the debate, officials from both sides say they remain committed to advancing negotiations and maintaining regional stability.
