Israeli envoy clashes with UN official

Published on: June 20, 2026 6:00 PM

Israel’s UN Ambassador Danny Danon clashed with senior UN officials during a General Assembly event on Friday. The confrontation occurred during a session marking the International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict. The incident highlighted growing tensions between Israel and United Nations officials over recent reports concerning Palestinian detainees and children.

The dispute began when Danon sharply criticized Pramila Patten, the UN secretary-general’s special representative on sexual violence in conflict. He demanded her resignation over a 2025 report that documented alleged patterns of sexual violence against Palestinians held in Israeli detention facilities. Danon accused the UN of unfairly targeting Israel and claimed the report reflected institutional bias.

As Danon continued his remarks, Vanessa Frazier, the UN special representative for children and armed conflict, attempted to raise a point of order. However, the Israeli envoy interrupted her and repeatedly told her to remain silent. The exchange quickly escalated, with both officials speaking over one another before the event continued.

The disagreement comes amid increasing scrutiny of Israel’s conduct in the occupied Palestinian territories and Gaza. Frazier recently issued a report placing Israeli military and security forces on a blacklist for grave violations against children. The report stated that children experienced record levels of serious violations, with government forces responsible for most documented cases.

Meanwhile, Patten’s report noted that UN agencies had not been granted sufficient access to independently monitor conditions and investigate allegations. The report also raised concerns about restrictions on humanitarian assistance. The public confrontation underscored deep divisions between Israel and UN officials as international debate over the conflict continues.
