President, PM urge Ashura unity message

Published on: June 26, 2026 6:16 PM

President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif urged the nation to promote Ashura’s message of unity and harmony. They called on religious scholars, media, and youth to foster inter-sectarian respect across Pakistan. Their appeal came as Youm-e-Ashur is being observed nationwide with solemn religious gatherings and processions.

In his message, President Zardari said the tragedy of Karbala is more than a historical event. He described it as an eternal source of guidance and a lasting lesson for humanity. He emphasized the importance of drawing inspiration from the values of sacrifice, courage, and righteousness demonstrated by Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA).

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said Ashura remains one of the most significant days in Islamic history. He noted that the sacrifices made at Karbala offer timeless lessons in faith, patience, perseverance, and selflessness. According to the premier, Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA) proved that defending truth and justice is greater than submitting to oppression.

Meanwhile, mourning processions and religious gatherings are being held across the country to commemorate the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA) and his companions. Religious scholars and speakers are highlighting the teachings of Karbala and the values associated with the historic sacrifice. Replicas of Alams and Zuljanah processions are also being carried out in several cities.

Authorities have implemented strict security measures to protect mourners and maintain order. Major processions are underway in Lahore, Karachi, Multan, Peshawar, Quetta, Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Gilgit, Skardu, Muzaffarabad, and other cities. Devotees have also arranged sabeels and niaz along procession routes to honor the memory of the martyrs of Karbala.
